The first time I had a Belvedere Bleu was at Margaux’s Restaurant in Raleigh, and I’m going to give the folks there credit for coming up with the name for this great martini. All that’s in it is Belvedere vodka, a minute amount of vermouth and bleu cheese stuffed olives.
These are so easy to make. First, get some large, pitted green olives and stuff them with your favorite brand of creamy bleu cheese. Refrigerate these for several hours before using them.
Next, chill your martini glasses. Pour your Belvedere vodka into a cocktail shaker full of ice and shake several times until the vodka is nice and cold.
Add a drop of vermouth to your chilled glass. And I’m serious, just a drop. Or, if you have a little spritzer like the one shown above (thank you Brad, great stocking stuffer from years ago!) just one spray of vermouth will do the trick. Or just show the glass the vermouth – you really don’t want too much of it messing up the drink.
Add the vodka, garnish with the olives and enjoy!
By the way, for you martini purists out there — yes, you can make this with gin. That’s what I made for my father-in-law since it’s his preference. He thought it was one of the best martinis he’s had. I have to give the olives the credit.
If you are out and about in Raleigh and want to try one of these, Margaux’s is a great place to go. So is Fleming’s Steakhouse at Crabtree Valley Mall. But the best place is Vinnie’s Steakhouse on Six Forks Road. Steve the bartender will hook you up with a great Belvedere Bleu, thanks to Vinnie’s awesome bleu cheese and his ability to make a decent, dry martini.
