Love A Fair

The North Carolina State Fair is in town until next Sunday. I went yesterday, for a couple of reasons, but the main one was that I had entered the “Anything but Ordinary” sweet potato cooking contest. The other was to eat that not-so-healthy but oh-so-good fair food. While I did not win a cooking title or any ribbons for that matter, I’m sure I gained a few pounds. But overall, it was a good day and a beautiful one,  too.

This is the first time I’ve entered a cooking competition at the State Fair and my expectations to win were low.

I’ve only entered one other cooking contest in my life (last year’s YMCA Chili Cook Off, which I won!) and had no idea what to expect. I’m still not sure about a number of things about this competition, but was happy with the judges’ comments about my Savory Sweet Potato Skins, which went something like this: “Great for tailgating,” “Great finger food” and “Bacon was a nice touch.”

There were 48 entries in all, so I was glad to receive this positive feedback. And I’m already motivated to enter again next year.

If you like fried foods that are sure to clog your arteries but make your taste buds do somersaults, the fair is the place to be. Fried candy. Fried Twinkies. Fried Girl Scout cookies.

Fried ice cream. Fried pickles. Fried vegetables (yeah, I’m sure they’re healthy.) You name it, you can probably find it fried at the fair.

Brad and I stuck with more traditional food in the few hours we were there. I started off with a country ham biscuit, which is one of my State Fair staples.

Brad got one of those turkey legs that remind me of medieval times and kings named Henry – it was huge and actually pretty good.

I decided on a polish sausage with peppers and onions – awesome! After eating that, I did not have room for any fried desserts – maybe next time.

You still have a week to go ahead and splurge – there’s just something about eating fair food as the temps get lower and the days shorter. Don’t forget your wallet – you will definitely pay for this once-a-year, not-so-healthy but oh-so-good food foray. And don’t forget those elastic-waist pants!
